Protecting Our Most Valuable Assets

Keeping Safe

The most valuable assets in almost all workplaces are the employees.  Our dental office is no exception.  It is everyone’s responsibility to keep our office safe for each other and for our patients.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is a government agency that since its inception in 1971 has been tasked with the responsibility to prevent any injuries or deaths resulting from practices and problems in the workplace.

The pictures in this blog capture my dental assistants Stephanie and Lis following one of the many OSHA mandates. OSHA requests that we research  the marketplace to discover  any devices or protocols  that could make our office safer.  The main focus is on preventing injuries with “sharps” (i.e. needles, surgical blades).   Here, Stephanie and Lis are trying out devices that cover the sharps immediately after use. The intent is to reduce injury with an exposed sharp.  After following the manufacturer’s recommendations and using the guards appropriately, they will make a determination as to whether these devices will actually enhance our protection.  If the answer is yes then we are obligated to incorporate these devices into our practice.

Have a safe year!
