Why are so many people cracking teeth?   The images in this blog are just a sampling of what came into my office this past week.  Other general dentists and specialists  are also reporting an uptick in the number of fractured teeth.

What is happening?

The causes of cracked teeth are many.  Large restorations, root canal treated teeth without the protection of  full coverage restorations, occlusal  (bite)  issues, grinding, acid erosion, decay, vigorous tooth brushing, trauma, and stress are just some of the causative agents behind this phenomenon.  Many times people are unaware that they even fractured a tooth.  Usually they have pain upon chewing.  This is known as “Cracked Tooth Syndrome”.

What can you do to avoid cracking teeth? Large restorations can be replaced with full coverage crowns or onlays.  Damaged teeth can be repaired with bonded fillings.  Root canal treated teeth can be built up and covered. Bite issues can be addressed. Mouth guards can be designed to reduce the damage done by nocturnal grinding and trauma.  Erosion and  other types of wear on the teeth can be managed by diet and counseling.

Regular visits to your dentist can result in early detection and treatment.

The last six months have gone by very rapidly.  It was time for my biannual teeth cleaning appointment.  Brenda, one of three dental hygienists at our office, was happy to oblige.

Brenda checked my mouth for oral cancer, measured my dental pockets, scraped a couple of roots, polished what was left and applied fluoride varnish to reduce sensitivity and enhance the strength of my enamel.

I love getting my teeth cleaned.

How about you?
