Giving Back

December 3, 2017

Last month Nicole (one of our dental hygienists) and I participated in an annual event called Care Harbor. Physicians, nurses, dentists, and hygienists along with their support personal and volunteers donate their services to treat thousands  of poor people  who line up for days  to be seen.  It is a great feeling to be able to give back by making a small contribution to another’s welfare.

Seattle Son

Many of my dental patients may have been wondering why I was unavailable most of August this year. My last blog detailed our family’s annual vacation. This year we spent three weeks in beautiful Iceland. When we returned, I fulfilled a promise to drive with my son to his first job.

1300 miles and three days later we arrived in Seattle, Washington.  The rest of the family flew up to  help Michael set up his new apartment and do some sightseeing.

The drive was arduous and the time away from my office was costly but what a great opportunity to spend time with my son as he embarks on the next stage of his life.

The Fourth of July

Every year I run the Huntington Beach Fourth of July 5K just to convince myself that all my body parts are still working.  Last year I was recovering from two broken toes and could not compete.  This year I was fortunate enough to be joined by my daughter Maddie, my son Michael and his girlfriend Esther.  We all crossed the finish line, some a lot sooner than others!

Happy belated 4th!

35 Years of Dentistry

April 1, 2016

When Liz, the Senior Associate Dean of my dental school, The University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, paid me a visit last week, I started to think about how long I have been a dentist. The answer is a robust 35 years!

I graduated from dental school in 1981 and joined the Navy Dental Corps as a Lieutenant.    After three years of active duty stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station in El Toro, CA, I entered private practice, finding  a home in downtown Long Beach.

Yesterday I treated an eighty year old woman who has been my patient for over thirty years.  Today I treated a patient whose mom was my first patient at my Long Beach location!

Thirty-five years!

Ski Trip1

Telluride, Colorado was this year’s site for the Cabrillo Dental Society’s annual ski and learn event.  My good friend Dr. Bill Fischer is a member and has graciously invited me and   four fellow University Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine alumni to join him on this annual trip.

Pictured above are Dr. Gary Lang, Dr. Bill Butt, your author, Dr. David J. Hauss and Dr. Bill Fischer.  A late scratch was  Dr. Mike Forman.  This year will be our 35th year anniversary from dental school.  These hands have helped shape a lot of smiles!

We ate elk, absorbed some dental knowledge, told stories, skied a beautiful mountain, and all returned home uninjured.

In this month’s blog we salute our dental hygienist Brenda.  In addition to being a great dental hygienist, she is a successful triathlete.  Shown above is Brenda competing in a recent triathlon.

Brenda motivates our patients to improve their dental hygiene with the same enthusiasm she uses to train and compete!
